I often start the decoration process doodling images on scrap paper, drawing on pictures and artists, seeing what catches my attention as the pencil wanders. When I have enough images that engage me, I draw them onto the pot with a pencil — but the act of drawing on a curved, cylindrical surface disturbs the intent and starts to suggest alternative images and juxtapositions, like the pot is telling you what’s best for it. At other times I am influenced by a particular artist or artistic style that has caught my attention. And there are times where I can just look at a pot and it tells me right away what it needs.
Usually my images tend towards the playful — suggesting a story or feeling, leaving space for the viewer to make of it what they will. It’s all a delicate balance: colour, shape, intention, glaze. Lately I’ve been exploring making the form itself more unusual, inverting the process and trying to surprise myself.
From making to first firing, then decorating to glaze-firing, takes a long time and can go wrong at any stage. Only slowly is a body of work beginning to emerge.
If you have a particular idea in mind — a specific image, subject or style — get in touch and I’ll see what’s possible.
